Melvoid Benson, one of the first African-American women in R.I. General Assembly, dies

She came to North Kingstown in 1964 with her husband, Arnathia N. “Ben” Benson, who was stationed at Quonset Point with the Navy. He died in 1989. They had two sons, Gilbert, who died in a car accident on Route 1 at the age of 16 in 1980, and Estes, who played football for the University of Rhode Island. Estes died in 1997 of leukemia.
