Big moments as R.I. Special Olympics open at URI

Everything leads up to the big moment: standing on the podium, getting the medal, and hearing cheers from family and friends.

That moment happened all afternoon Friday, sometimes under a light rain, as the track and field events of the 2016 Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games hit their stride at the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus. The competitions will continue all day Saturday and part of Sunday, until about 1,500 athletes have participated.
