WW II film narrated by Bill Belichick to premiere May 27

Film produced by URI alumnus Tim Gray

KINGSTON, R.I., — May 1, 2017—New England Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick will make his debut on the big screen this month in a World War II documentary produced by University of Rhode Island alumnus Tim Gray.

“D-Day Over Normandy’’ will be screened Saturday, May 27 at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium, One Avenue of the Arts, Providence. Tickets are $15 and benefit Gray’s nonprofit, The World War II Foundation.

The film marks the first time Belichick, who has won a record five Super Bowls, has narrated a documentary film. Due to the coach’s hectic schedule, he will not be able to attend the premiere, sponsored by BankNewport.

“Bill did a tremendous job narrating this film,’’ says Gray. “He actually narrated the documentary right in the middle of the first day of NFL free-agency in a sound-studio inside Gillette Stadium while making deals to bring in new players. He’s the ultimate multi-tasker.”

A Kingston native, Gray graduated from URI in 1989 with a degree in journalism. He worked for years as a sports anchor at Channel 10 before starting his nonprofit to make films about World War II veterans.

Belichick, who has watched all of Gray’s 18 films, has an interest in the war because his father, Steve, served in Europe and the Pacific as a member of the U.S. Navy.

All veterans will receive free tickets to the event at the Vets’ box office with proof of military service. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.thevetsri.com or by phone at 401-421-2787.

After the film, Gray and two Rhode Island veterans of D-Day’s Omaha Beach invasion will participate in a question-and-answer session with the audience. The documentary will air Memorial Day, May 30 on 116 public television stations throughout the country.
