KINGSTON, R.I. — December 12, 2005 — The University of Rhode Island’s School of Education has formed a partnership with the Rhode Island State Council of the International Reading Association to promote literacy.
The Council’s mission is to support teachers of pre-kindergarten through high school who teach students to read, write, speak, listen and think critically.
The partnership, which will be formalized on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. at URI’s University Club, Upper College Road, Kingston campus, is open to all public, private, and charter school teachers in the state.
URI’s role will be to create networking and leadership opportunities. Assistance with curriculum and course offerings to help teachers advance their literacy training skills are in the formation stage.
“Our goal is to involve the entire community—URI, teachers of literacy and all Rhode Islanders—in improving literacy education,” says Diane Kern of URI’s School of Education. “This partnership has great potential to coordinate the resources of literacy-related organizations and to support Rhode Island teachers’ efforts to improve students’ literacy achievement.”
