URI’s Math Department to host Calc-Bowl April 10

KINGSTON, R.I. – April 6, 2007 – The University of Rhode Island Department of Mathematics will sponsor its first URI Calc-Bowl, welcoming 14 teams of talented high school and college students from across the state to compete against other students in pre-calculus and calculus.

The event, which takes place Tuesday, April 10 at 3 p.m., offers students from URI, Rhode Island College, and Rhode Island high schools an opportunity to test their math knowledge.

The department is hosting the event to highlight mathematics, recruit top students to URI, and recognize and reward talented mathematics students in Rhode Island. James Baglama, Lubos Thoma, and Li Wu, all URI math professors, organized the event to “share the power and intrigue of mathematics with a large audience.”

Calc-Bowl is a lively mathematical competition between teams of five players in the format of a game show. It tests participants’ math knowledge in a competitive environment.

Teams will compete in several rounds of play in the Cherry Auditorium in the Kirk Building on the Kingston campus. There will be a final playoff for first place. Certificates and more than $750 in prizes will be given to the top teams.

Refreshments will be provided for all who attend. For more information, contact Baglama at 874-4412.
