in URI’s Energy Solutions poster contest
KINGSTON, R.I. – November 26, 2008 – Students from Charlestown, Cranston, Cumberland, Newport, North Kingstown and South Kingstown were named winners in the University of Rhode Island’s Energy Solutions poster contest.
The winners were announced at the Energy Solutions Expo at the Ryan Center on Nov. 6.
“We were thrilled by the creativity of the entries we received,” said Corrie Haley, a URI senior from South Kingstown who coordinated the contest. “It was a real challenge to select the winners because all of the entrants deserved recognition.”
Students were asked to imagine how energy might be produced in the year 2050, and the responses were artistic designs of such unusual energy sources as dandelion power, trash-powered cars, and a carbon dioxide-powered chair. Entries were judged in four age groups by an impartial panel. Winners received renewable energy toys or MP3 players.

Grades K-3
First place: Allison Ferreira, grade 3, Cumberland Hill Elementary School
Second place: Benjamin Laliberte, grade 2, Wakefield Elementary School
Grades 4-5
First place: Kevin Whitaker, Grade 5, West Kingston Elementary
Second place: Isobel McCullough, grade 5, Wakefield Elementary School
Third place: Sarah Hackey, grade 4, Wakefield Elementary School
Grades 6-8
First place: Jake Bianchi, grade 6, Rocky Hill School (lives in Newport)
Second place Nina Abbenante, grade 6, Rocky Hill School (lives in North Kingstown)
Third place: Ross Spencer, grade 8, Chariho RYSE School (lives in Charlestown)
Grades 9-12
First place: Emily Santos, grade 9, South Kingstown High School
Second place: Samantha Armenti, grade 9, Cranston High School East
Third place: Nathalie Wisecup, grade 12, Portsmouth High School (lives in Newport)
