URI’s Alumni, Family Weekend set for Oct. 25-27

Rhodyville Block Party, football, soccer, concerts among activities

KINGSTON, R.I. — Oct. 18, 2019 — Thousands of University of Rhode Island alumni, families, friends and students will be in Kingston Oct. 25 through 27 for dozens of activities and events as part of Alumni and Family Weekend.

And actually, the spirit starts to build on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when the Student Alumni Association holds the Rhody Rally in Keaney Gymnasium from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Athletic teams, Rhody cheerleaders, the Ramettes and That Ram Band will join students to pump up URI student-athletes for the weekend.

A full weekend of activities, starts Friday, Oct. 25 from 4:30 to 5 p.m. with a Family Welcome, hosted by Vice President for Student Affairs Kathy Collins, in the Robert J. Higgins Welcome Center. An evening with John Mulaney at The Ryan Center is sold out that night, but you can check out a performance of the URI Big Band with Director Emmet Goods at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

On game day, Saturday, Oct. 26, tailgating and Greek Village tailgating are open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is an advance $10-per-car charge to tailgate and a $15 charge the day of the event in the Plains Road parking lot. The Rhodyville Block Party in the Plains Road Lot at the corner of Tootell Avenue and West Alumni Avenue will run from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. That Ram Band, Rhody cheerleaders, and Ramettes will come through Rhodyville at noon to lead the crowd into Meade Stadium

And at 1 p.m., the exciting Rams football team will take on Elon at the new and improved Meade Stadium.

After the game, a reception for families will be held in the Memorial Union and a Recent Alumni Homecoming Social at George’s of Galilee will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m. URI men’s soccer is at home against Davidson and Rhody men’s hoops has an exhibition game against Rhode Island College.

If you’d like to sample some of URI’s finest musical talent Saturday night, take in the URI Symphony Orchestra concert at 8 at the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

On Sunday, there are even more events, including the Be 5K Run/Walk for Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention on the Quad at 10 a.m. and women’s soccer against Duquesne at 1 p.m. URI will honor its seniors at the game.

“We like to say that we have something for everyone at Alumni and Family Weekend,” said Sarah Bordeleau, assistant director of Alumni Engagement. “If you like athletics, we have plenty of events for the fan and the participant, but if music is your thing, we have great events at the Fine Arts Center. Of course, we’re looking for big turnouts at Rhodyville and a packed house at Meade Stadium for the football game. So join us for Alumni and Family weekend and be part of the Rhody family.”
