URI women’s sailing team in first place in regional round of national championship

KINGSTON, R.I. – May 25, 2016 – The University of Rhode Island women’s sailing team is in solid possession of first place among teams in the East semi-final round of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s spring nationals underway in San Diego.


As of 3 p.m. (eastern time) today, May 25, the Rams are tops among 18 teams in the East regional as part of the Sperry Women’s National Semi-Final and Final Championship. Thirty-six college sailing teams from across the country are in the regatta. By the end of the semi-finals today, the top nine teams from the East and the top nine from the West regional will enter the final rounds Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27.


Chris Daigle, URI club sports coordinator, said URI is 14 points ahead of its nearest competitor as of 3 today. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy is first among those in the West semi-final.
