KINGSTON, R.I. – September 11, 2008 – University of Rhode Island oceanography professors Steven D’Hondt and Arthur Spivack, two of the coordinators of URI’s 2008 Honors Colloquium, “People and Planet: Global Environmental Change,” will answer questions about global warming and the Honors Colloquium events in an online chat on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m.
D’Hondt is a geological oceanographer who studies life in extreme environments – especially life in sub-seafloor sediments – and biological controls of ocean chemistry. Spivack is a chemical oceanographer whose research focuses on environmental and marine geochemistry.
The 2008 Honors Colloquium explores human-caused global change, its consequences and potential responses through a series of lectures, films, exhibits and a cabaret.
“Humans have been affecting our environment on a global scale for millennia,” said D’Hondt. “This year’s colloquium is going to examine those changes and outline the kinds of choices people might make collectively to minimize their effects.”

URI’s online chats, which began in September 2004, have featured question-and-answer sessions with such alumni as Tom Mulligan, Los Angeles Times senior correspondent discussing the Iraq war, and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ross Kaufman talking about the making of Born into Brothels, as well as with URI administrators, faculty and coaches.
