URI to screen films directed by Peng Xiaolian

KINGSTON, R.I. –November 16, 2007—The University of Rhode Island will screen three films directed by Peng Xiaolian, winner of the 2004 Golden Rooster Award, the “Chinese Oscar” for her film Shanghai Story. The screenings, free and open to the public, are subtitled.


The director will speak about the issues of women in contemporary China on Dec. 11. Her visit is part of the URI Honors Colloquium, China Rising. The semester-long series explores China’s dramatic transformation during the past three decades, a transformation that has returned that country to the leading role it has played throughout most of world history.


The films will be shown at 7 p.m. in room 271 of the Chafee Social Science Center, 10 Chafee Road, Kingston.

• Wednesday, Dec. 5: Women Story
