Working in cooperation with the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, URI has developed a certification program for landscapers and landscape architects who work in areas protected by coastal buffer legislation. To earn the certification, attendance is required at one of two full-day workshops on coastal landscaping.
The first session, on Jan. 31, targets landscape architects, designers and engineers and will focus on design elements. A second session on Feb. 1 for landscape maintenance and installation professionals will emphasize best management practices. Both sessions will address CRMC regulations, plant selection for buffer zones, storm water management, and controlling invasive species and other pests.
To earn the certification, those attending either session will also be required to attend a follow-up class next fall when new buffer regulations are enacted.
In addition, workshops of general interest will be offered to professional landscapers and those seeking to maintain their Certified Horticulturalist designation. These programs include afternoon workshops on native plants on Jan. 16, care and maintenance of trees and shrubs Jan. 18, lawn diseases and insects Jan. 23, and lawn fertilization Jan. 25.
