URI to host Underwater Exploration Camp during April vacation week

Kids 11-15 invited to learn about ocean science technologies

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. – March 13, 2014 – Children ages 11 to 15 with an interest in science and the ocean are encouraged to register for the University of Rhode Island’s first Underwater Exploration Camp, which is scheduled to run during April vacation week, April 21-25, at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.

During the camp, participants will learn about ocean exploration by building and testing oceanographic technologies, including remotely operated vehicles and hydrophones, which they will be able to bring home with them at the end of the week. They will also meet oceanographers and ocean engineers, visit the Inner Space Center, and learn how audio, video and other data from deep-sea research is transmitted around the globe via satellite to scientists at the Inner Space Center.

The camp is limited to 15 participants, so those with an interest in registering should sign up soon. The deadline for registration is March 21. The camp costs $495 per person. It will be offered again August 11-15, 2014.
