URI to host Journalism Day, Nov. 5, with panel talks about social media, magazine writing, video journalism

KINGSTON, R.I. – Oct. 21, 2015 – Interested in learning how to write responsible social media postings or break into magazine writing?

The University of Rhode Island will cover those topics and more during Journalism Day, Nov. 5, on the Kingston campus. All panel discussions are free and open to the public.

Pamela Reinsel Cotter, assistant managing editor of breaking news at The Providence Journal, and Dan McGowan, a reporter for Channel 12, will talk about “Social Media Responsibilities for Reporters” from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Room 360 at the Memorial Union, 50 Lower College Road.

Julie Tremaine, creative director of Providence Media, and Jamie Coelho, associate editor of Rhode Island Monthly, will talk about “Breaking into the Magazine Business” from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Room 308 at the Memorial Union.

Erica Moura, multimedia reporter at the Boston Herald; Peter Huoppi, director of multimedia at The New London Day; Susan Kimball, video reporter at the Portland Press Herald; Sue O’Connell, co-publisher of Bay Windows; John Freidah, a former photographer for The Providence Journal who now works as a multimedia specialist for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Tim Egan, governor of the Boston chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, will talk about video journalism from noon to 1 p.m. in the Multicultural Center, 74 Lower College Road.

The event is sponsored by the Rhode Island Press Association and URI’s Department of Journalism in the Harrington School of Communication and Media.
