URI to host Celebration of Cultures at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center, Dec. 5

Event includes cultural performances, family activities, plant tours

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – November 16, 2015 – The University of Rhode Island’s Extension Outreach Center and the Providence Parks and Recreation Department will honor the rich diversity of those living in the Providence area with a Celebration of Cultures at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature performances by Bollywood dancers, Congolese drummers, storytellers and Latin dancers, as well as family activities, culturally themed plant tours, food vendors and more.

Admission is free with the donation of a canned good, and a free shuttle will stop at the Community Action Partnership of Providence, West End Community Center and Dorcas Place International Institute on its way to bring participants to and from the event.

“We are excited to expand our outreach to first-time Botanical Center visitors, introducing them to an oasis of beauty and a bounty of plants from around the world,” said Vanessa Venturini, an extension educator who is coordinating the event for URI. “The Botanical Center also serves as a nice connection to nature and an environment that is intrinsically connected to many cultures.”

Plant experts will offer tours of the Botanical Center throughout the event to highlight some of the culturally significant plants on display, and youth activities will feature environmental and cultural themes to connect children to their heritage and the natural world. In addition, exhibits will showcase the gardening, horticulture, energy and related programming offered through the URI Extension Outreach Center and other community partners.
