URI to hold Rhody the Ram Charity Yard Sale June 12

KINGSTON, R.I. – June 8, 2010 – Attention all bargain hunters: the University of Rhode Island will again hold one of the biggest yard sales in the area to benefit area charities and the Rhody the Ram Endowment.

The seventh annual Rhody the Ram Charity Yard Sale will be held Saturday, June 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, June 13. Students, community members, faculty, and staff will join forces in the Keaney Gym parking lot to boost the endowment that supports students who serve as the URI mascot, and to donate clothing, food, and other items to local charities.

“We’ve had tremendous success getting students involved by having them donate clothes and food to charity and other items to the yard sale,” said URI Recycling Coordinator Nancy Hawksley, and co-coordinator of the yard sale. “Instead of throwing away items, students were encouraged to place yard sale items, along with unwanted clothing and non-perishable food items, in the lobbies of their dorms as they move out.”

Community members are also welcome to set up tables to sell their goods for a fee of $25.

“Community members have found this a great way to support the endowment and to sell their items at a yard sale that always attracts plenty of visitors,” said co-coordinator Gerri Beagle, human resources and business manager of the URI Foundation.

All food donations will benefit South County shelters, and clothing will be donated to the Jonnycake Center and Big Sisters.

For the past six years, proceeds of the yard sale have helped support the Rhody the Ram Endowment. This provides financial support to students who volunteer their time performing as the Rhody Ram mascot at URI events.

Recipients of this financial aide must be at least sophomores in good academic standing. The incentive provided by this approach helps recruit new mascots and/or retain current ones.
