URI Theatre to open season with thriller, “Boy Gets Girl”, Oct. 15

KINGSTON, R.I. –September 24, 2009 –University of Rhode Island Theatre will open its season with a thriller on Oct 15. Boy Gets Girl is a disturbing contemporary spine-chiller about a woman whose life of accomplishment is quickly destroyed by a disturbed admirer. The play works powerfully at its most basic level, as a suspenseful tale about the unraveling of a strong woman’s sense of security in the urban jungle. “Rebecca Gilman is a playwright to hail. Boy Gets Girl is gripping, important, and the finest, most disturbing American play in years!” –TIME magazine.

The play will be performed in J Studio, Fine Arts Center, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston Campus. It will run Oct. 15 through 17 and Oct. 22 through 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. Admission is $16 for the general public, $12 for senior citizens and URI faculty/staff and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling 401.874.5843 or online at www.uri.edu/theatre.

Jimmy Calitri, an adjunct theatre professor and director at URI, Rhode Island College, and the Community College of Rhode Island, will direct the play. He has coordinated and directed performances of The Scarlet Affair and The Spring Carnevale at the Gamm Theatre in Pawtucket. “Working on Boy Gets Girl has been a collaborative effort. When dealing with a show such as this one, there are many powerful and sensitive themes to excavate. The show not only deals with stalking, but the art of obsession and the complicated nature of gender relationships. An educational environment such as the URI Theatre Department is the perfect setting for such exploration,” he said.

Design team members are URI grads or current members of the department: costume design by Amanda Downing-Carney, ’03, scenic design by Renee Suprenaut ’09, lighting design by Matt Terry ’95, and sound design by Jason Brodeur, senior design.
