URI Theatre to hold auditions for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

KINGSTON, RI – January, 31, 2008 – The University of Rhode Island Theatre Department announces audition dates for the play The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which will be performed in April. Auditions are open to the public.

Written by Jay Presson Allen and based on the novel by Muriel Spark, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is set in 1930s Edinburgh, Scotland. Brodie is a spellbinding, unconventional teacher at a girls’ school who, with her opinionated, anecdotal and eccentric teaching style, grasps the imagination of a group of girls during the most impressionable time of their lives. Her male colleagues conclusion: “Give me a girl at an impressionable age, and she is mine for life.”


Audition dates: Tuesday, Feb. 5 and Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 6 to 11 p.m.,

Robert E. Will Theatre, Fine Arts Center.

Prepare a 1-to 2-minute well-written, contemporary monologue that describes an event or tells a story with which you feel an emotional connection. No slang or foul language.


Callbacks: Thursday, Feb. 7, 6 to 11 p.m., be prepared to read sides from the script.


Rehearsals begin March 4. Please be aware that the cast will be required to learn a Scottish accent.


Performance dates: April 17 to 19 and 24 to 26, 7:30 p.m.

April 20 and 27, 3 p.m.
