KINGSTON, R.I.—December 2, 2008—The University of Rhode Island Theatre Department announces upcoming audition dates for The Foreigner. The auditions are open to the public. Here are the scenarios and requirements:

The Foreigner by Larry Shue is set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia. The comedy revolves around two of its guests, Charlie Baker and Englishman Froggy LeSuere. Charlie is so pathologically shy that he is unable to speak. As way of explanation, Froggy claims his companion is the native of an exotic country who does not understand a word of English.

Before long, Charlie finds himself privy to assorted secrets and scandals freely discussed in front of him by the other visitors. This fuels the non-stop hilarity of the play, and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the “bad guys” while the “good guys” emerge triumphant. The play won two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.

Alan Hawkridge will direct URI’s production. Here are the details:

Performance Dates: Feb. 26 through 28 and March 5 through 7, 7:30 p.m., March 1 and March 8, 3 p.m.

Audition Date: Tuesday, Dec. 9 from 6 to 10 p.m. in G Studio

Callbacks: Wednesday, Dec. 10 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Rehearsals begin: Week of January 12

Rehearsals are generally held weekdays, Tuesday through Friday, 7 to 11 p.m.

Saturday rehearsals are 11 a.m. to no later than 6 p.m. Sundays are from 1 to 6 p.m. or 6 to 11 p.m.

Audition Requirement: Prepare a one-to-two minute contemporary, comedic monologue
