URI students, faculty to join walk for suicide prevention

WHO: More than 200 University of Rhode Island students, faculty and other campus community members. Ten classes of URI101, Traditions and Transformations, a class that helps first-years students with the transition to University life.


WHAT: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Walk. As part of the community service component of URI101, students have organized, marketed and raised funds for the walk. Studies show suicide is second leading cause of death among college students, and the 11the leading cause of death in the U.S. Worldwide, there are more deaths from suicide than to accidents, homicides and war combined. To be held rain or shine.


WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, noon to 3 p.m. Registration begins at noon. Walk begins at 1 p.m.


WHERE: Walkers will start at the URI track, which is to the west (or behind) Keaney Gymnasium and the Ryan Center. Walkers will proceed on a walk throughout campus showing support for survivors and raising awareness of suicide and ways to prevent it.
