KINGSTON, R. I. — February 4, 1999 — Mark Gabriele, 28, of Providence, a senior at the University of Rhode Island, has been selected as the 1999 George C. Marshall ROTC ( Reserve Officer Training Corps) Award winner. The Marshall Award is the highest and most prestigious award that an ROTC cadet can receive. Each year, universities that offer ROTC select their most outstanding graduating senior for this honor. Gabriele, a sociology major, was selected because of his academic performance, as well as his demonstrated leadership potential. As a result of his selection, Gabriele has been invited to attend a weeklong ROTC National Security Seminar, which will be held in April at the Natural Bridge Convention Center in Lexington, Va. Gabriele is a Desert Storm veteran and served as a military police staff sergeant for seven years on active duty, prior to attending URI. He currently holds the highest ROTC cadet leadership position as the Cramer’s Sabers Battalion commander. Upon his graduation from URI in May, Gabriele will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve as a military police officer and will be assigned to a National Guard unit in Rhode Island.
