URI Residential Life Weather Advisory

The following storm preparation notice was sent to University of Rhode Island students residing on the Kingston Campus from the Division of Student Affairs’ Department of Housing and Residential Life.

To all URI students residing on campus:


Please be aware that Sandy, a CATEGORY 1 Hurricane is traveling north in the Atlantic Ocean. The center of the Hurricane is currently located approximately 250 miles off the east coast Florida. Forecast models suggest that the eye of this hurricane will make landfall somewhere between southern New Jersey and the east coast of Massachusetts. Landfall is currently forecast to occur on Monday afternoon. The initial affects of the storm will be felt as early as Sunday afternoon and the storm will continue through Tuesday evening. It is anticipate that at the time of landfall winds will be between 30 and 50 miles per hour with gust to 75 miles per hour. Five inches of rain is also likely.

For your safety


Residents who have made plans to go away for the weekend are advised to leave as soon as possible and should monitor weather forecasts for the Kingston, R.I. area to determine when it will be safe to return to campus.


Residents should also be aware that the URI Residence Halls will remain open and fully staffed through the duration of the storm. Dining Services will also be open during this period, however hours of operation may be restricted.


Please check the web sites for the hours of operation, between now and Wednesday, for other URI Departments and URI Affiliates of interest to you. Residents should frequently check their residence hall office for weather updates and other related information.

Before you leave for the weekend, or before Saturday at 8pm, if you are staying please:

1. Bring all items on your balcony into your room for residents who have a balcony

2. Close and lock your windows

3. Acquire and medicine or other supplies that you may need during duration of the storm

4. Check-in with family members so that they are aware of your plans
