URI piano studio celebrates Chopin & Shumann, Nov. 19

KINGSTON, R.I. –November 9, 2010 –The University of Rhode Island’s Piano Studio presents a 200th anniversary salute to Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann, two titans of 19th century piano literature, with their concert, “Happy Birthday Fred & Bob!” Free and open to the public, the concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Nov. 19 in the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston.


Vocal music by Schumann and piano solo music by each of the two composers will be performed by URI voice and piano students selected by audition. In addition, URI voice faculty artist and Boston Camerata soloist soprano Margaret Frazier will sing Er ist’s, an upbeat song about the arrival of spring and Aufträge, a light, rapid, playful song about a young man’s attempt to send messages of love to his sweetheart through a wave, a dove and the moon. She will be accompanied by Manabu Takasawa, who is director of the URI Piano Program and an internationally recognized pianist. Student vocalists will be accompanied by student pianists. Dr. Takasawa is the coordinator.


Concerts seats are available on a first-come basis. The box office opens 45 minutes before the start of each concert. The URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall is handicap-accessible, and parking is available in the lot behind the building, off Bills Road.
