KINGSTON, R.I. –May 17, 2012 –The University of Rhode Island Music Department and the Community Music Program are offering an exciting, creative, educational, and inspiring Summer Intensive Jazz Camp for students in grades 9-12 and beyond from July 9 through July 14. For the first time, jazz campers have a choice of commuting to camp daily or staying in supervised campus housing. For more information or to register online, go to http://www.uri.edu/communitymusic/jazz.html.

Jam packed with big bands, theory and specialized classes, combos, master classes, and concerts, students will learn in an intensive, noncompetitive setting taught by URI’s award-winning jazz and percussion faculty. Small class size enhances individual attention and focus on the student.

Classes will include theory, improvisation and ear training. Master classes in each instrument will be offered, featuring faculty artists Jared Sims, Dave Zinno, Steve Langone, and Joe Parillo.

Faculty members specializing in voice, piano, guitar, bass, brasses, winds and percussion/drum set will create a well-rounded instrumentation.

Each camper will be assigned to at least two ensembles, which will enable them to work on many different styles. Drummers will play on a world of instruments in percussion ensemble.

Camp begins Monday, July 9 at 9:30 a.m. with a general meeting. Overnight campers will move into their residence hall that morning after placement auditions. Day campers will be dismissed at 5 p.m. daily. Camp ends with the final student concert on Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m.
