URI offers free walking tours to explore South Ferry history

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. – July 11, 2008 — Relive the history of a once-thriving village on Narragansett Bay with family and friends on Wednesday, July 23, by taking a walking tour of historic South Ferry. The 90-minute interpretive walk will take place at 10:30 a.m., beginning at the Coastal Institute Visitor Center on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus.


Led by volunteers Wayne and Bernice Durfee of Narragansett, the program will guide participants through the historic sites at South Ferry, including the old ferry landing, the World War I military bunkers, and the campus of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.


A second South Ferry walking tour will take place on Wednesday, August 6, at 10:30 a.m.


At the conclusion of the walking tours, participants will have the option to view the South Ferry Church as well. In addition, participants can visit the Coastal Institute Bookstore, which will be open until 2 p.m. the day of the walk.
