URI offers free walking tour of historic South Ferry, July 22

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. – July 10, 2009 — Relive the history of a once-thriving village, which became a military outpost, on Narragansett Bay with family and friends by taking a South Ferry Walking Tour, sponsored by the University of Rhode Island. The public is welcome to join the 90-minute interpretive walk on Wednesday, July 22, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Coastal Institute Visitor Center on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus.


Led by volunteers Wayne and Bernice Durfee of Narragansett, the program will lead participants through the historic sites at South Ferry, including the old ferry landing, the World War I military bunkers, and the campus of the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.


A second South Ferry Walking Tour will take place on Wednesday, August 5, at 10:30 a.m.


There will be an option at the conclusion of the tours to view the South Ferry Church. In addition, participants can visit the Coastal Institute Bookstore, which will be open until 2 p.m. during the day of the walk.
