Narragansett, R.I. — November 4, 2003 — Dr. James Miller, University of Rhode Island professor of ocean engineering, has been elected a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA). He is being honored for his contributions to acoustic tomography of ocean sediment. He will receive a citation from the professional organization at its annual conference next week in Austin, Texas.

Miller, along with ocean engineering marine scientist Dr. Gopu Potty, will present a paper at the ASA conference entitled “Attenuation Inversions in the East China Sea.”

A resident of Kingston, Miller received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, and his Ph.D. in Oceanographic Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology through its joint program with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He was appointed to the ocean engineering faculty at URI in 1995.

Miller conducts research and teaches courses in sonar systems engineering, acoustic signal processing, underwater acoustics, marine bio-acoustics, and underwater vehicle design. He has spent the last few years developing Long Range Sediment Tomography as a technique to rapidly estimate the properties of the ocean bottom.

The ASA was founded in 1929 for the purpose of serving the widespread interests of its members and the acoustics community in all branches of acoustics, both theoretical and applied. Currently, nearly 7,000 men and women who work in acoustics throughout the U.S. and abroad belong to this prestigious society. ASA is primarily a voluntary organization and attracts the interest, commitment, and service of a large number of professionals. Their contributions in the formation, guidance, administration, and development of the ASA are largely responsible for its world-wide preeminence in the field of acoustics.
