URI, Naval Undersea Warfare Center to sign agreement to assist Rhode Island businesses

WHO: Capt. Michael Coughlin, commanding officer of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport; Donald Aker, deputy technical director at NUWC; Vic Ricci, chief technology officer at NUWC; Theresa Baus, head of the Technology Partnerships Office at NUWC; Stephen Stewart, director, Small Business Program at NUWC; URI President David M. Dooley; URI Business Engagement Center Executive Director Katharine Flynn; and numerous URI and NUWC researchers, and representatives of the defense and marine trade industries.

WHAT: The University of Rhode Island, through the Business Engagement Center, will sign a partnership intermediary agreement with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC). The first of its kind for the University, this agreement will formalize the relationship between the University and NUWC to promote cooperative activities between the institutions, including activities and events to promote education, and workforce and economic development in Rhode Island as related to the defense, undersea technology and marine industries.

In addition, NUWC and URI will leverage their respective resources to provide access to unique facilities and equipment, and expertise to start-ups and existing companies, as well as perform matchmaking services for the University and NUWC, increasing the number of small business collaborations under patent license agreements, cooperative research and development agreements, and direct contracts.
