URI Master Gardeners open their gardens to visitors for Rhode Island’s only statewide garden tour, July 13-14

Posted on
KINGSTON, R.I. – June 17, 2013 – Dozens of private and public gardens, designed and maintained by Master Gardeners trained through the University of Rhode Island’s Master Gardener program, will be open to the public for the sixth Gardening with the Masters, Rhode Island’s only statewide garden tour, on July 13 and 14. The gardens will be open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on both days, rain or shine.

Guidebooks, which serve as admission and include garden descriptions and directions, cost $20 and must be purchased in advance. They are available at numerous garden centers around Rhode Island or from the URI Outreach Center on the Kingston campus. The guidebooks can also be obtained by calling 401-874-2900.

This year the garden tour will emphasize the educational aspect of every participating garden by having each Master Gardener highlight the unique, instructive features and styles of their garden. The garden guidebook will index these aspects for easy reference for tour participants.

Another addition for this year will be the highlighting of Rhody Native plants in the gardens and how they function as tough and colorful alternatives to some common but invasive plants often used in our landscaping.

A colorful preview of the featured gardens is available at https://www.facebook.com/RhodeIslandMasterGardenerAssociationTour2013 and at the URI Master Gardener website: www.urimastergardeners.org

Gardening with the Masters is sponsored by the URI Master Gardener Association, a 700-member, all-volunteer service organization of certified URI Master Gardeners, whose mission focuses on education, outreach and sustainability.

Proceeds from the event will benefit programs of the URI Master Gardener Association. Below are the garden centers that have the guidebook on sale:
