KINGSTON, R.I.—March 31, 2009 –The University of Rhode Island’s Library Gallery will exhibit works by Peter Anderson April 1 through April 30. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Sundays from 1 to 11:30 p.m.; Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Peter Anderson is a native Rhode Islander. Except for a few years in the Army, he has lived and raised his family in southern Rhode Island. After graduating from URI in 1974, he continued drawing and painting in his spare time. To earn a living he has been an electronic technician for local companies. His latest job is with Astro-Med Inc. in West Warwick.

The artist has been active with the South County Art Association for many years, and he has attended figure drawing classes and workshops. When he and his wife eventually retire, they plan to go to Costa Rica, where he will have another unique landscape to paint and explore. His work includes oil paintings, watercolor paintings, charcoal drawings and sculpture.

“I find that there is a lot to explore in nature and you can always return and go deeper and deeper to discover new possibilities,” says Anderson. “In fact, my interest in bees led me to become a beekeeper for a while. Although I don’t always go to that extreme, I do try to go below the surface. Art has helped me stay engaged in the natural world when there are so many other priorities.

“I use charcoal for the shapes and tones, watercolor for the transparency and simplicity and oils for the solidity and texture,” says Anderson. “Working different mediums gives me a fresh perspective; a different way of looking and understanding, and one medium can inform another.”
