KINGSTON, R.I. – March, 14, 2012 – The University of Rhode Island has inducted one of its largest classes ever into the national freshman honor society, Phi Eta Sigma.
A total of 480 freshmen out of 826 invitees, averaging a cumulative grade-point average of 3.75, chose to become official members of the oldest and largest freshman honor society in the United States.
To be eligible to join, students must have achieved a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 at the end of their first semester.
“This is great for URI and reflects the freshman class’ academic achievements,” said John Rooney, from the Office of New Student Programs at URI. “The large number of inductees shows that the numbers of strong students is gradually getting larger.”
“As members of Phi Eta Sigma, students have access to both national and chapter scholarships,” Rooney said. “Chapter scholarships are available to students pursuing undergraduate research or studying abroad. There is also a national “Founders Fund” scholarship in which URI can nominate 3 students annually. Scholarship awards range from $100 to $7500.”
Programs such as Resident Academic Mentors, Study Abroad, URI 101 Mentors, Honors Program, Peer Tutors, and Civic Engagement Leaders seek out Phi Eta Sigma members because of their academic success.
Meaghan-Rose Costello, a psychology major from Ellington, Conn., posted a GPA of 3.7 last semester and is on the road to continue her success in the classroom.
“I have never been recognized for academic achievements, so when I got the letter in the mail, I jumped on the opportunity and I am honored to be a part of this society,” Costello said.
Her optimism and attitude toward getting involved on campus, making the right decisions and enjoying her major are key parts to her success.
“I love psychology classes, it’s a major where I belong,” Costello said. “Surprisingly, I look forward to my 8 a.m. classes and I carry the information I learn in class in life situations and see it happen before my eyes. Psychology taught me we are not good multitaskers as much as we like to think we are, so I take one class at a time and try not to stress about it.”
Costello plans to earn her master’s degree with aspirations of working as a developmental psychologist with children in a hospital setting.
Gina Conti, an accounting major from Burlington, Mass., posted a GPA of 3.94.
“When I got the letter in the mail, I researched the society, talked with my family about it and realized the benefits were worth it to join,” Conti said. “I stay on top of everything, I’m very list-oriented and put 100 percent of effort into everything I do.”
With a hefty workload studying accounting, Conti manages her time well.
“I love what I do and think accounting is great, but keeping yourself sane is very important. I partake in yoga two days a week and that’s where I channel everything and let my stress out.”
Conti plans to obtain her accounting license and her master’s degree. She would eventually like to become an accounting professor.
Lauren Erickson, from Berlin, Conn., posted a GPA of 3.94, double majoring in psychology and human development and family studies.
“I was very surprised to be invited to join the society. I had no idea there was an organization like this for freshmen. I was very happy,” Erickson said.
Apart from her accomplishments in the classroom, Erickson is associated with the URI marching band, psychology club, Colleges Against Cancer and the Renaissance Yearbook. “I definitely do keep myself busy. Time management is key. I take care of what needs to be done in a timely manner and focus on what I need to accomplish giving my best effort. I enjoy my classes and feel comfortable with the major I’m pursuing.”
Erickson plans to receive her master’s in psychology once she graduates and hopes her time as an undergraduate will give her a better idea of a potential career to pursue.
URI’s high academic achievers display a strong sense of self-motivation and hard work.
“Once a part of Phi Eta Sigma, students can take positions in the society and opportunities will arise that will open doors for students,” Rooney said.
Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois, Phi Eta Sigma encourages and rewards academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning. The organization is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment and serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. The organization also provides freshmen honorees the opportunity to meet other scholars from all academic disciplines on campus and to join in the promotion of academic excellence. There are more than 300 chapters and 550,000 members in the United States.
