URI hosts Poinsettia Open House Dec. 6 Plants on sale Dec. 15 and 16

KINGSTON, R.I. — November 22, 2000 — The University of Rhode Island greenhouses in Kingston will be the site of the largest display of poinsettias in the Northeast when URI hosts its sixth annual Poinsettia Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Featuring 105 different varieties of poinsettias blooming in many shades and patterns of red, white, pink and gold, the plants are part of a scientific evaluation and testing program to determine the best cultivars and soil mixes. The poinsettias will go on sale to benefit the URI Plant Science Club on Friday, Dec. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (They will not be for sale during the Open House since data collection for the testing program will not yet be complete.)
