URI hosts Poinsettia Day Dec. 8

KINGSTON, R.I. — Nov. 28, 2001 — Tis the season to brighten the home with holiday plants and decorations. To make holiday decorating easier, the University of Rhode Island will host its first annual Poinsettia Day on Saturday, Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the URI Greenhouses on the Kingston Campus.

The highlight of Poinsettia Day will be the sale of more than three dozen varieties of poinsettias grown by URI Master Gardeners, as well as paperwhites and amaryllis’ grown by the URI Plant Sciences Club. Holiday crafts will also be on sale.

In addition, the event will feature a wide variety of activities for the entire family in preparation for the holiday season, including workshops on making wreaths and table arrangements and decorating your yard for wildlife. Children can learn how to make pine cone decorations, and the Rhode Island Christmas Tree Growers Association will provide information on how to care for holiday wreaths and trees.

Any plants that remain unsold after Poinsettia Day will be available for sale in the URI Greenhouses on Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The workshop schedule is as follows: 10:15 a.m. Table Landscaping for the Holidays; 11:15 a.m Decorating Your Yard for Wildlife; 12:15 p.m. Prune Your Trees, Make a Wreath; and 1:15 p.m. Preparing for Next Year’s Garden.
