Thanks to an assist from Rhody’s Alisha DiFilippo of Hope, R.I., Katie Augustine opened the scoring to give the United States a 1-0 lead.
URI’s Cassie Catlow, the 2013 American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Zoe Harris (national) Player of the Year, also had an assist on a goal scored by Ramey Weaver, which put the U.S. in the lead for good. Catlow is a resident of Saunderstown.
“We weren’t sure how good we were going to be going into the game, but now we know,” said Mo Stroemel, head coach of the 2013 U.S. Women’s National University Team in a release issued by USA Hockey. “This was a really good Russian team. Not only do we know we have a good team, but a great bunch of people on this team. As a staff, we’re looking forward to continuing the tournament on Thursday and helping this group reach its potential.”
The U.S. Women’s National University Team is scheduled to play Thursday, Dec. 12 when it squares off with Great Britain. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. Eastern time.
Alisha DiFillippo, had an assist for Team USA in the opening roud of the World University Winter Games in Italy. .
