WHO: Members of the University of Rhode Island’s Greek System, composed of 12 fraternities and 10 sororities, students, and staff from the Urban Collaborative Accelerated Program (UCAP), Providence.
WHAT: Philanthropy has always been a tradition among Greeks at URI. Funds raised during this year’s annual Philanthropy Week ($10,500) will be donated to UCAP. This is not the first time URI Greeks have lent their support to the school. A couple of years ago, the Greeks donated $1,000 to help the school buy basketball uniforms. During the fundraising week, URI Greeks invited UCAP students to perform at one of their fundraising events. The UCAP students danced, recited poetry, and rapped. When they finished, a roar of appreciation filled Edwards Auditorium.

WHY: URI Greeks watched “Accelerating America,” an award-winning documentary about UCAP, which gives inner-city youths at risk of dropping out a second chance by accelerating their studies. The URI students were impressed with the school, its staff, and particularly with the students and their struggles and paths to school.
