URI Graduate School of Oceanography Students Receive National Fellowships

URI Graduate School of Oceanography Students Receive National Fellowships Narragansett, RI — January 21, 2000–Two URI Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) students are the recipients of the 1999-2000 National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. Magdalena Andres and Douglas Mitchell were two of 140 graduate students chosen from around the nation to receive the three-year fellowship. The Department of Defense offers NDSEG Fellowships to students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering. The fellowships are awarded for study and research leading to doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, ocean and engineering sciences. In the ten years since the program started, approximately 1,075 fellowships have been awarded from more than 22,000 applications received. Magdalena Andres received her B.S. from the University of Rhode Island. She studies geological oceanography at GSO under the guidance of major professor Dr. Jean-Guy Schilling. A native of North Kingstown, she currently lives in Narragansett. Douglas Mitchell received his B.S. from Boise State University in Idaho. He is a physical oceanography doctoral student, studying current variability in the Japan/East Sea and modeling the 1996 glacier flood in Iceland. His major professor is Dr. Mark Wimbush.
