URI Family Therapy Clinic offers parenting program, Nov. 7

KINGSTON, R.I. — October 20, 2005 — The University of Rhode Island’s Family Therapy Clinic will present its parent training program that encourages communication and mutual support in families.


Designed for parents with children ages 6 and under, the Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) program, provides parents with the tools needed to increase cooperation and develop a more responsible attitude among children. Parents will learn communication skills, positive discipline techniques, ways to build self-esteem and more.


The program begins on Monday, Nov. 7 and runs from 7 – 9 p.m. for six weeks. Classes will take place on URI’s Kingston Campus in the Transition Center, 2 Lower College Road (corner of Lower College Road and Rte. 138). The cost is $40 per family and includes the parenting handbook. Pre-registration is required.


The Family Therapy Clinic offers confidential, affordable counseling services to couples, families and individuals who need help in coping with difficulties in their lives. Fees are determined by family income and range from $10 to $35. Primary counseling services include family therapy for child and adolescent problems, premarital, marital and step-family counseling, separation and divorce counseling, and individual counseling.
