KINGSTON, R.I. – October 12, 2006 — The University of Rhode Island has appointed Gregg Burke as interim director of athletics, effectively immediately, it was announced today by URI President Robert L. Carothers.

The term of the appointment as interim athletics director is from today until July 1, 2007 or until a permanent director is appointed. The University will conduct a national search for a permanent director of athletics in the spring of 2007. Burke has been serving as acting athletic director since May.

“The University is extremely fortunate to have had Gregg serving as acting director of athletics during the past several months,” Carothers said. “From his permanent role as deputy director, he was prepared to move into the senior leadership position. While this has been a challenging period, he has accomplished all that we have asked him to do.

“URI athletics continues to meet all its obligations, as a result of Gregg’s leadership in building a spirit of openness and cooperation. I am particularly grateful to him for his focus on student athletes and their welfare.”

A resident of North Providence and a Warwick native, Burke joined the University as deputy director of athletics in September 2004.

“I look forward to continuing our mission of providing top-flight academic and athletic experiences to our student athletes, to supporting a terrific roster of coaches, and to finding creative ways to meet our challenges, “ said Burke. “I’m grateful for the on-going support of Dr. Carothers and his administrative team, for the dedication and hard work of the athletic staff, and to the many URI alumni and friends who support our efforts every day.”

Prior to joining the University, Burke owned his own consulting firm, was vice president of the International Basketball League, and was assistant and associate athletic director at Providence College. He has more than twenty years of experience in athletics administration, media relations, marketing, promotion, development and advertising.
