KINGSTON, R.I. — January 6, 1999 — The following is a list of speakers and the schedule for the URI Landscape Architecture Spring Lecture Series “Challenges Along the River.” All lectures are free and open to the public. Lectures will begin at 7:30 P.M. and will be held in the White Hall auditorium on URI’s Kingston Campus. In order to help revitalize the city of Hartford many planning and design activities have focused on the Connecticut River. Richter will examine some of the issues and challenges working along this and other bodies of water. January 28 Bill Taylor, ASLA, Principal, Carol R. Johnson and Associates, Cambridge, Mass. CRJA is one of the largest and most successful landscape architecture firms in the United States. Its work on the Cambridge Canal, Connecticut and Charles Rivers and other waterfronts has been recognized for design excellence and ecological sensitivity. Taylor will offer a view of how the firm approaches river fronts in New England and in Asia. February 11 Peter Rothschild, ASLA, Principal, Quennell Rothschild & Partners, NYC. QRP has established its reputation through 30 years of award winning landscape architecture involving historic preservation and park and open space planning. Hudson River Park, Harlem Beach Esplanade and the Randall’s Island Master Plan are examples of projects which illustrate the firm’s ability to address the complex of issues found along the urban waterfront. March 4 Lee Weintraub, Landscape Architect, NYC. The renewal of derelict urban waterfronts provides unique opportunities for landscape architects today. Gantry Plaza is a 4.5 acre park, the first piece of a 74 acre waterfront park at Hunters Point, New York. Weintraub’s work with communities and public-private interest groups highlights the challenges in bringing an urban waterfront park project to fruition. April 8
