URI announces honors and appointments

KINGSTON, R.I. — January 27, 2000 — The following honors and appointments involving University of Rhode Island faculty or staff were recently announced: Three University of Rhode Island scholars took part in the 23rd Annual Conference of the Northeast Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies held at the University of New Hampshire earlier this month. Wendy W. Roworth of Providence, professor of art history; Catherine Sama of Providence, assistant professor of languages; and Katherine Scheil of Providence, assistant professor of English participated in the more than 70 panels that reflected upon the practical imagination of the 18th century. The theme of the Conference was “Projects and Projectors: Inventions of the Enlightenment,” and included such events as an art exhibition featuring 18th century Venetian printmakers, a presentation by Harvard Professor and Pulitzer-Prize-winning author Laurel Ulrich, and a performance of Centlivre’s The Bassett Table. The Rhode Island State Nurses Association has selected Janet Hirsch, of North Kingstown, to receive The President’s Award for overall nursing service and public education. Hirsch is currently professor emerita of nursing at the University of Rhode Island, where she has taught for 35 years.
