URI announces appointments to fundraising team

KINGSTON, R.I.-August 24, 1999 — The University of Rhode Island Division of University Advancement has recently announced the appointments of Alan Axelrod to the position of Assistant Director of Planned Giving, and Dana DiMarco to the position of Assistant Director of Major Gifts. Axelrod, of Providence, R.I., has had much experience with fundraising, grant writing, and donor cultivation and solicitation. Prior to joining the University, he was Vice-President at Philanthropy Solutions, Inc. of Providence, where he managed fundraising projects on behalf of numerous clients. Before his work with Philanthropy Solutions, Inc., Axelrod worked for nine years at United Way of Southeastern New England as Vice-President of Gift Planning, where he established a planned giving program and wrote and implemented the program’s marketing plan. Before joining United Way, he managed Axelrod-Music, Inc., of Providence. Axelrod also has an active role in the community and is involved in such organizations as the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island, Planned Giving Council of Rhode Island, and the Coalition of Library Advocates. As Assistant Director of Planned Giving at URI he will work to expand the connection to alumni and friends of the University interested in making planned gift commitments. Axelrod graduated from Brown University with a degree in American Civilization and from Rhode Island College with a Masters in English. DiMarco, of Providence, R.I., has worked extensively with client relations, account management, fundraising and grassroots campaigning. She comes to the University from The Share Group, Inc. of Somerville, Mass., where she managed fundraising and grassroots campaigns. While there, she handled a customer base of over 45 clients that grossed over $2.8 million and was head of two teams that executed fundraising campaigns. Prior to her work at The Share Group, DiMarco was Program Manager/Account Executive for The Progressive Group, Inc. of Hadley, Mass., where she administered and managed client programs and developed long term fundraising strategies in collaboration with client’s needs. As URI’s Assistant Director of Major Gifts, DiMarco’s primary focus will be to increase the number of major gift donors to the University’s premier fund, the Annual Fund, that provides student scholarship resources, faculty development funds and more. Originally from Seekonk, Mass., DiMarco graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. She currently serves as a member of the Direct Marketing Association and the National Society of Fundraising Executives.
