Top URI Freshman honored as University College Scholars

KINGSTON, R.I. — January 6, 1999 — Eleven University of Rhode Island students were recently honored for their academic achievements during their first year and named 1998–1999 University College Scholars. To be designated as a University College Scholar, students must earn at least a 3.95 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0 in their freshman year. Nine of the 11 scholars this year are from Rhode Island. This year’s University College Scholars are: Daniel Chaves of East Providence, a microbiology major; Chad Greene of Hope Valley, a business-finance major; Christopher Kantorek of Berkeley Heights, N.J., a landscape architecture major; Kelly McCarthy of West Buxton, Maine, a journalism major; Christina Neil of Pascoag, a business major; Mathew Panciera of Westerly, a chemistry major; Fredric Pollnac of Saunderstown, a wildlife biology and management major; Nicholas Ucci of Warwick, a political science major; and Stanley Youngsaye of Cumberland, a chemical engineering major.
