The summer heats up with the URI Graduate School of Oceanography live and silent auction on June 3

URI Graduate School of Oceanography students and Friends of Oceanography partner to raise money for scholarships and educational programs

Narragansett, RI — May 13, 2005 — The Chowder and Marching Society (the URI Graduate School of Oceanography student association) and Friends of Oceanography will kick off the summer of 2005 with a live and silent auction at the Towers in Narragansett on June 3 at 6 p.m.

In addition to a live and silent auction, the fundraiser will feature a cocktail reception catered by West Bay Gourmet, a raffle, and music. The public is invited to attend.

“We have an exceptional array of items for people to bid on,” said David Farmer, dean of the Graduate School of Oceanography. “GSO students have put a lot of hard work into this event, and I encourage people in the community to attend and help our students become the next generation of scientists conducting important research on our bays, seas, and oceans.”

Some of the items up for bid include a framed original cartoon by Don Bousquet from his next book, Born in Rhode Island; a sunset sail, including fine wine and hors d’oeurves, on Narragansett Bay aboard Dulcinea, a 36-foot restored classic cruiser, out of Newport Harbor; a hand-drawn color rendering of the buyer’s boat of choice; a bowtie from GSO’s first dean Dr. John A. Knauss; a dive tour for four; a wedding or special occasion cake to serve 150; and a great selection of artwork, trips, and nautical items.

Tickets for the 2005 GSO Live and Silent Auction are $30 per person. Proceeds from this event will support URI Graduate School of Oceanography scholarships and educational programs for students.
