Team USA edges Korea 5-4 in World University hockey

KINGSTON, R.I. – February 20, 2009 – Boosted by a goal from a University of Rhode Island player, the U.S. University Select Hockey Team defeated Korea, 5-4, in an overtime opening round game Thursday in Harbin, China.

Devin Sheehan, a junior forward from Binghamton, N.Y. brought the United States to within one goal of the Korean squad when he put one home at 8:06 of the second period during the 2009 Winter World University Games. The period ended with Korea enjoying a 3-2 edge.

In the third period, Rhody’s Kyle Krannich of Randolph, N.J. had an assist on a Team USA goal that tied the score at 3-3.

The final period ended in a 4-4 tie, forcing a 5-minute overtime. Johnny Liang of the University of Illinois scored his second goal of the game to give Team USA the 5-4, sudden-death victory.

North Scituate’s Joe Augustine, skipper of the URI men’s hockey team, is head coach of Team USA. Jon Biliouris, a senior defenseman from North Smithfield, and Dan Lassik, a freshman defenseman from Garnet Valley, Pa. are also representing URI on Team USA. Team USA is back in action Sunday, Feb. 22 when it faces Slovakia at 6 a.m. Eastern time.
