KINGSTON, R.I. — October 24, 2001 — Special Agent Jeffrey Norwitz of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service will return to the University of Rhode Island’s Forensic Science Seminar Series on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.
Norwitz, who spoke several weeks ago on the topic of terrorism, will discuss “Spy Catching and Other Forensic Tales.” His talk in Room 124 of Pastore Hall on the Kingston Campus is free and open to the public.
Thursday’s presentation will focus on the field of counterintelligence. Although not filled with forensic adventures, investigations of espionage and spies do have unique forensic considerations which distinguish them by the covert and clandestine nature of the crime.
Norwitz received a bachelor of arts in criminal justice from Eastern Kentucky University in 1974. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Military Police. After completing Airborne School, he was assigned to the 50th Ordinance Company where his duties involved physical security of nuclear weapons. Norwitz joined the Colorado Springs Sheriff’s Office in 1978. Specialty assignments included special weapons and tactical team, firearms instructor, and commander of the bomb squad.
He received awards for heroism, life saving and superior performance. In 1985 he became a Special Agent of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service with tours of duty in California, Washington D.C., Okinawa, and Newport. In 1994, the Secretary of the Navy personally presented Norwitz with the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal for highly classified efforts impacting the national intelligence community.
He received a second such award for his work during Operation Desert Fox. In June 2001, Norwitz graduated from the senior Officer Course at the Naval War College, receiving a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies. He is presently assigned to the War College as professor of national security decision making and is developing courses on counterintelligence.
