Sakai, Gradebook2, and iPad teaching workshops open to faculty this fall

KINGSTON, R.I. – October 19, 2011 – The Office of Online Teaching and Learning at the University of Rhode Island will be hosting workshops this fall teaching Sakai and other technologies to faculty.

The schedule is as follows:


• Friday, Oct. 21, noon. Chafee 208. Gradebook2 and other teaching tools. Vince Petronio, assistant professor of communication studies.


• Thursday, Oct. 27, 1 p.m. Chafee 208. The Professional Image: Getting Students Ready. Rosie Malaghan, faculty member at the Office of Internships and Experiential Education.


How can you help your students translate their classroom learning and accomplishments into the development of a professional online career image? In this workshop we will explore resources and tools that are available for students, faculty and staff as they develop professional presence on the Internet and create online career portfolios.


• Thursday, Oct. 27, 3 p.m. Chafee 602. iPad Revisited: Strategies for Student Learning. Jay Fogleman, assistant professor of education.


Building upon the first iPad workshop, the conversation about using this tool (and others) to enhance student learning continues. Join in for pragmatic and successful approaches.


• Thursday, Nov. 3, 3:30 p.m. Chafee 208. Let’s Make a Wiki: An Interactive Workshop. Brett Rutherford, Distance Learning Program coordinator and Kathleen Torrens, associate professor of communication studies.


This workshop is an interactive event where all participants work to construct a wiki using Sakai’s wiki tool. You’ll do a little advance work, bringing to the workshop some resources on a prescribed topic. How better to learn than by doing?


• Thursday, Nov. 10, 3:30 p.m. Chafee 208. Innovative site design with Sakai. Vince Petronio, assistant professor of communication studies.


Explore new ways to design your Sakai course site, with an eye to enhancing the student experience.


• Thursday, Nov. 17, 11 a.m. Chafee 208. The Professional Image: Getting Students Ready. Rosie Malaghan, faculty member at the Office of Internships and Experiential Education.


• Friday, Dec. 2, noon. Chafee 208. Sakai 101: The basics of teaching with Sakai. Vince Petronio, assistant professor of communication studies.


This workshop features the basics of teaching with Sakai, whether you intend a fully online, blended, or web-enhanced course. Bring your questions and experiences!
