KINGSTON, R.I. – March 31, 2011 – Urban planner and author Chester Hartman will be the keynote speaker for the fifth annual Dr. Marcia Marker Feld Lecture for Social Justice and The City on the URI Feinstein Providence Campus Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
Hartman, the director of Research for the Poverty and Race Research Action Council in Washington, D.C., is an adjunct professor of sociology at George Washington University. He has written 20 books on housing, urban planning, poverty, race and other topics, and his articles have been published in numerous academic and popular journals and newspapers.
His lecture “Four Decades of Radical Urban Planning: Social Values and Housing Opportunities” will be held in the Paff Auditorium of the Providence Feinstein Campus, 80 Washington St. The event is free and open to the public.
He has been a consultant to numerous public and private agencies, including HUD, the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Stanford Research Institute, Arthur D. Little, California Rural Legal Assistance, the Urban Coalition, the California Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Legal Aid Society of New York.
Following the lecture, there will be a panel discussion featuring local urban planning experts who will respond to Hartman’s comments.
The annual Marcia Marker Feld Lecture on Social Justice and the City honors Feld’s lifelong contribution to furthering urban social justice. Professor Emeritus of URI’s Center for Urban Studies and Research, Feld is a pioneer who paved the way for women in planning, a visionary who recognized the potential of university-community partnerships, a tireless advocate for this country’s urban areas and the people who live there.
