New scholarship available for cancer survivor(s) at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. — November 9, 2001 — Any student enrolled at the University of Rhode Island who has been diagnosed with and treated for cancer may be able to get some financial help paying for his or her college education.

The Board of Directors of the Pacific West Cancer Fund has given URI a $1,500 scholarship to be used to assist a student, or possibly students, who are surviving cancer.

By funding the scholarship, the Board said it hopes to bring attention to the importance of early detection of cancer. It also hopes to persuade others to adopt a lifestyle that will allow them to avoid the heartache of a dread disease and the ultimate interruption it causes in one’s life.

The scholarship may be applied for one or more academic terms.
