Jerry Sidio, director of Facilities Services, said there is no timetable for restoration of power to those buildings, which are served by National Grid. Repairs will be made based on National Grid’s schedule, which Sidio said was not known this morning.
Those along Upper College Road without power are the: Women’s Center, Ruggles House, Hart House, Campus Police Station on Briar Lane, Visitor’s Center, Alumni Center, the International Engineering Program houses, the URI Foundation, Tucker House and Adams House.
In addition, three buildings on the URI electric system were affected by the storm. The University’s contractor is responding to restore power to the Child Development Center and the International Student Center. The Transition Center had partial power, but was being shut down to restore power to the other two buildings.
Irene knocked out power at the W. Alton Jones and Narragansett Bay campuses Sunday and Alton Jones is without power this morning. Power was restored at the Bay Campus this morning at 3:30. The Providence Campus was the only URI site unaffected by Irene.
Tom Mitchell, the director of the Alton Jones facility in West Greenwich, said a tree fell across a road near Whispering Pines Conference Center. Crews are working to clear the area, and URI’s electrical contractor is on scene repairing the lines so that when the feed to Alton Jones is restored, power can be restored. Mitchell said four generators are in use.
“We have cleared the roads of all trees and used a blower to remove all the pine needles,” Mitchell said. “There was no flooding and my staff is all safe. We housed our overnight staff in the Environmental Education Center, and they spent the night playing board games. My big worry is we have some major commitments for the weekend, including two weddings. We’ll have to assess our readiness on a daily basis.”

The University of Rhode Island is open for business today, August 29. While there are scattered power outages on the Kingston Campus, there is no state of emergency. Therefore, all employees not previously approved for leave are expected to be at work. If they are not able to work in their specific work location due to a power outage, they must either relocate to another space either in the same building or elsewhere on campus, or they may discharge personal time, vacation or RT time if they don’t report to work or if they leave work before the end of their scheduled workday.
