Memorial walk to be held April 22 for URI students lost on bay

KINGSTON, R.I. — April 17, 2006 — A memorial walk for the three University of Rhode Island students who have been missing on Narragansett Bay since March will be held Saturday, April 22 at 2 p.m.

The walk will begin at the Bonnet Shores Community Center and proceed to the water’s edge of Narragansett Bay from which the students, Daniel Donahue, Fandia Shloul and Geoffrey Wilkes, embarked in a rowboat.

The Bonnet Shores Fire District is sponsoring the event.

Their disappearance prompted the largest marine search effort in Rhode Island waters in the last 15 years.

A flyer about the walk read, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life off our shores on March 13th. We believe it is fitting that the Bonnet Shores community demonstrate our solidarity with the URI community in sharing their grief.”

The walk follows the annual Narragansett-URI Spring Cleanup from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cleanup will begin at 10 a.m. at the Bonnet Shores Community Center. Work will be done in Bonnet Shores, Eastward Look, and the village of Point Judith.
