KINGSTON – November 12, 2010 – The role of journalists as watchdogs and how to find internships and jobs in the field of news-gathering are the focus of two panels to be offered Thursday, Nov. 18 as the University of Rhode Island hosts Journalism Day. Co-sponsored by the URI Department of Journalism and the Rhode Island Press Association, the annual event will be held in the Memorial Union, 50 Lower College Road., Kingston.
A panel discussion from 10 to 11:45 a.m. will be offered in Atrium 1 on the topic “Journalists as Democracy’s Watchdogs.” Panelists are: Kate Bramson, reporter, The Providence Journal; Jim Hummel, HummelReport.com and former Channel 6 reporter; John Marion, executive director, R.I. Common Cause; Josh Bickford, editor, Barrington Times; and moderator Nancy Kirsch, editor, R.I. Jewish Voice and Herald.
A lunch of pizza and soda will be free to panelists, faculty and students in Atrium 2 from noon to 1:15 p.m., paid for by the R.I. Press Association.
This will be followed by a panel from 1:30-2:45 p.m. in Atrium 1 on “Finding Journalism Internships and Getting the First Job.” Panelists are: Chris Lanni, news director, Channel 10, WJAR-TV; Tim Martin, assignment editor and interim web producer, Channel 6, WLNE TV; Brenna McCabe, former editor-in-chief of URI’s student newspaper The Good 5c Cigar, now reporter, Valley Breeze newspaper; Steve Greenwell, former Cigar editor-in-chief, now reporter/editor for Patch.com; Josh Aromin, journalism student and part-time editorial assistant at Rhode Island Monthly magazine; Samantha Turner, journalism graduate, now Patch.com reporter; and moderator Barbara Meagher, professor of journalism at URI.
